Dubai: Join Us For A Night At The Opera!
Opera! Some love it, others loathe it, but there’s no doubting its longevity since Jacopo Peri’s first production of “Dafne” in Florence in 1598.
An amalgamation of music, poetry, singing, drama and a fair amount of angst, opera can transport you to a time and place far from your plush seat.
For some of us, as much as we love the performance, it’s about the entire evening. Are you ready for a night at the Opera?
Design & Construction.
The long anticipated, but not as originally intended, Dubai Opera opened at the end of August 2016. The original Zaha Hadid design, planned within a cultural centre on Dubai Creek, was shelved in 2008 due to Dubai’s real estate collapse.
Atkins Global’s Janus Rostock Design Director and Head of Architecture was tasked with the design do-over and a new location was confirmed. In 2013 UAE developers, Emaar Properties hit the start button on the new site in the shadow of Burj Khalifa.
Dubai Opera’s design represents a dhow, the traditional Arab sailing vessel still used today in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean.
Since Placido Domingo’s opening performance Dubai Opera has staged Bizet‘s Pearl Fishers; Rossini‘s Barber of Seville; Vivaldi‘s The Four Seasons; a Mozart Gala; Les Misérables; West Side Story and Cats, to name just a few.
There has been Flamenco, Ballet, Anoushka Shankar’s sitar and most recently Puccini‘s Madam Butterfly. Tonight it’s another Puccini classic: La Bohéme.
Drinks & Dinner.
At.mosphere, the bar and restaurant on Burj Khalifa’s 123rd level is a perfect place for pre-opera drinks & dinner. 3-hour time slots need to be reserved in advance.
Our tip: arrive at 5-pm for a leisurely cocktail taking in Dubai by day, through sunset and into the evening.
Tables require a minimum spend. Right at the window, it’s currently AED 350 and back from the window, AED 270.
Another tip: reserve a stool at the bar with zero minimum spend. It’s quite acceptable to wander around to take photos.
When it’s time to dine, The Armani Hotel‘s Ristorante Armani features 2 and 3-course pre-opera packages served from 6-pm.
Nearby at the Palace Hotel, Thai restaurant, Thiptara takes in the Dubai Fountain and offers pre-show dining packages along with 15% off wine for opera goers.
The Palace Hotel and Burj Khalifa are walking distance to Dubai Opera but in heels and the heat, we suggest a cab. Be mindful of the circular boulevards of downtown Dubai to ensure you arrive on time.
Curtain call for La Bohéme.
A few things to note.
Ticket collection can be found on the ground floor, though when making your purchase, e-ticket selection is available.
Alcohol can only be purchased and consumed on level 1.
There are sandwiches and snacks in case there wasn’t time for dinner.
Any intermission refreshments are ordered before the performance begins.
Inside, red leather seating highlights the extensive use of natural timber. The coveted boxes are reminiscent of the sailing vessel theme of the exterior and although it seats 1900, the atmosphere is intimate.
The lights go down, the last of the seat shuffling ceases and the orchestra kicks off. As the curtains open, Rodolfo is gazing out the window while Marcello paints. Let the performance begin.
Post Mortem
Post-opera drinks are a must. How else can the show’s post-mortem be completed? Grab a cab for the short hop to Taj Hotel and take your pick of the stylish venues.
The Eloquent Elephant is a club style gastropub at ground level with craft beers, well-mixed cocktails and attentive service.
Tesoro on level 3 with Burj Khalifa views from its terrace offers a late night menu and should it be Thursday, you’ll save 50% on your entire bill.
The Taj Hotel’s show-stopper is Treehouse. On the extensive outdoor patio of level 3 with a Burj Khalifa and Dubai Opera backdrop, indulge in smokin’ cocktails and funky tunes. “Join the tribe and come up and play”.

I’d never thought of Dubai and Opera together but it sure looks like a nice night, especially post-opera drinks.
A little indulgence is necessary now and then, David and the opera is just that. Views and more views and the cocktails don’t hurt either. 🙂
That sounds really amazing. I wouldn’t have thought of Opera in Dubai. Good to know. I think it would be in our summer list of things to do in Dubai when it gets too hot.
That is an excellent idea, Siddharth & Shruti. The program covers the summer months and it will be a wonderful place to remain cool…. 😉
I didn´t realize there was such a cool Opera theater in Dubai! However, it shouldn´t have surprised me – nowadays you could find pretty much everything in Dubai! Thanks for sharing all the places for food and drinks, would def combine one of these with my Opera visit when in Dubai!
Cheers, Anna. Yes, Dubai certainly has everything you could think of and more. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. 🙂
Dubai always mesmerized me by it’s display of luxuries! I would love to see the opera. And the Burj obviously is gorgeous!
There is certainly a lot of bling, Sandy N Vyjay, but there are lovely traditional areas to explore too. It’s quite a melting pot and well worth a visit. 🙂
Great information and links for the Opera, before and after time. Love the hint to reserve a space for a bar stool with no time limit at the Atmosphere. I have not been to Dubai yet but I have heard that is the place to visit. Thanks for sharing!
Dubai is certainly worth a visit, Stephanie and no visit is complete without a cocktail at At.mosphere. The views are incredible! 🙂
Wow! I’d never have put Dubai and Opera together but this looks like an incredible way to spend an evening! I can’t say I’m a major opera fan but it’s definitely on my bucket list to see a show at some point!
The opera is new for Dubai, Sarah, but the quality of performance is as good as anywhere. The impressive Burj Khalifa as a back drop is helps too. 🙂
Unfortunately I have never been to the opera before but I would love to give it a try in Dubai. The view from the 123 floor is absolutely stunning – plus pre-drinks are always a good idea.
Absolutely Oana, it’s a fun evening out and the views just add to the magic. 🙂
This seems like a great night out in Dubai! I have never been to the opera before, but love theatre so I don’t see why I wouldn’t like it. Pre-drinks in the tallest skyscraper before and some more after? Yes please!
If you love theatre, Kreete, the opera won’t be a huge leap. A cocktail before and after will help too 😉
I would love to do all of this (ok maybe not the actual opera bit unless I wore ear defenders – not my thing at all) but it all sounds fabulous and looks amazing. I am definitely up for the pre-opera drinks and the after opera meal for sure! #feetdotravel
It’s definitely a special night out, Tracy and the opera might surprise you! 😉
Fancy-schmancy! We have yet to go to the Opera, but love to see broadway shows. We will need to have a date night out to enjoy, unfortunately without the dog-daughter. 😉
Yeah, I don’t think the dog-daughter would have the best time. 😉 I think you’d enjoy it, though. A definite date night for the future! 🙂
Wow, what a fabulous experience, and how special this I have been! I can imagine an opera in Dubai was very opulent but what an evening it would be! Drinks at the Burj would be the icing on the cake for me. #feetdotravel
It was a very decadent affair, Angie and we loved every minute. Drinks at the Burj Khalifa are a must regardless of whether Dubai Opera is on the agenda. Treehouse is also fantastic for views and excellent cocktails. I have a feeling you’d like it! 😉
Thanks for sharing something different about Dubai! We didn’t know about the Opera. We never visited Dubai before but we will add the Opera on our list. The read leather seating and timber everywhere make it very special.
Keep up the great work.

Hi guys! Yes, it’s definitely worth a look, even if you only have time to wander the building. Being right in the heart of downtown a lot of other attractions are on the doorstep.
Thanks for your comment & support! 🙂
Somehow I didn’t associate Dubai with Opera but it sounds like an amazing evening out! Dubai is beginning to appeal more and more due to there being so much to see and do! Thanks for sharing!
Dubai certainly has its drawcards, Alexei. From souks and traditional transport to Hummer limos and bling, it’s certainly an interesting place. 🙂
This is a very useful post for a night at the Dubai Opera. Reserving a stool at the bar sounds like a must! The list of bars for the after show drink all sounds tempting. The venue itself photographs beautifully, I can almost feel the atmosphere.
Cheers, James! It’s a fun night and a picturesque location with the icons surrounding it. 🙂
Looks a great night out, never been to the opera so it would be a first. Your post is full of useful information.
Thank you, Paul & Carole, we had a great time. Although we love to travel it’s also great to do something different in your own back yard. 🙂
I’m pleased it gave you some inspiration, Annalise. I love forgetting about life for a couple of hours and being totally entertained by professionals. This was a great performance. 🙂
Great post! Was so nice to read a travel blog about something a bit different. I love theatre and this has made me want to go and see something again soon!
Great effort. Another good read.
Thanks, Golden Oldies! 🙂
Great post! I would have loved to seen the opera while I was in Dubai. Next time I suppose. The tips you provided are very useful. Drinks at the Burj are a must! Also, it’s great you focused on the culture in Dubai, something that exists but is often overlooked by visitors who are enamored with the major attractions.
Thanks, Albert! You’ll definitely have to check out what’s on at Dubai Opera next time. The program is really tight with shows on for just a couple of days so it’s packed all the time. I will definitely be returning, it’s a fantastic venue. 🙂
