Delicious Copenhagen
Delicious Copenhagen; a foodie’s heaven. 18 Michelin stars across the city; World’s 50 best restaurant award 4 times; produce markets, street food and dining districts all within walking distance. Today we’re focusing on easily accessible delectable food while we wander the streets. There may be a little retail therapy too. 😉
Central Copenhagen is easy to walk but if you need to add speed, do as half a million Danes do and ride a bike. City Bikes are available 24/7, 365 days. A simple credit card transaction through the tablet on the handlebars unlocks the bike and it can be returned to any City Bike location. The tablet also provides GPS and directions.
Let’s begin at Torvehallerne. A development conceived by Hans Peter Hagen of 2 simple glass covered halls and open air stalls. Fresh produce, coffee vendors, bars and staples are on sale to consume there or take home. Nørreport metro station provides direct access to the market or park your bike with the many others nearby.
Vibrant fresh fruit, vegetables and potted herbs from outdoor vendor Frugt & Grønt have us feeling instantly healthy.
Tyrkisk Slagter, Cleavers Meat Market and Slagter Lund prepare meat cuts on site. Hav.dk have omega 3 and 6 covered in plump bright fish while Hav2Go cook fish and shuck oysters ready to devour immediately. Cheese mongers offer “try before you buy” and for cured meats, sherry and paté hit Deli Del Toro.
Have a chat with Jon Capoul in Le Pinard wine store and learn of his family’s winery in France. They produce a surprising white Bordeaux. Le Pinard stock only organic and bio-dynamic wines.
Visit “Palæo” for guilt-free low carb sandwiches, wraps and salads and don’t miss ex-Noma pastry chef, Rosio Sanchéz’s traditional handmade tacos at her taqueria, Hija De Sanchéz. For the traditional Danish open-faced sandwich try the aptly named, Hallernes Smørrebrød. Sushi, Thai, Mexican, Vietnamese, Italian; you can travel the world at Torvehallerne.
Cross Nørre Voldgade to Frederiksborgade and follow it to check out the view from the Round Tower. If you’re lucky enough to encounter our friend Darren; Australian born/ Copenhagen resident, he may show you 360-degree views of Copenhagen from his school’s rooftop.
Opposite the Round Tower is the eclectic Kunst & Håndværk where Birk Danish Design’s Coastal Amber embellished knitwear and stunning range of jewellery can be found. Tumbled for up to 40 million years, pieces of amber are thrown from the sea onto the beach during storms then collected and Signe Birk models them into rings and knitwear additions. Some polished but mostly left in shapes and designs Mother Nature intended, they make for truly unique accessories. Angeles Blanco also has a bright, bold and fun range of rings in store.
Continue shopping along Strøget Street in the direction of Nyhavn. Pick up a canal tour or rest and enjoy a drink in the many restaurants and bars. A short ride from here across the river will take you to Paper Island or Papirøen.
CPH Street food fills warehouses 7 & 8 on Paper Island. With some 36 bars and food stalls under one roof, it’s easy to spend a few hours nibbling through the international offerings. Don’t miss Duck It. Their pulled duck burger on brioche with salad is a must. Copper & Wheat will double cook your fries in duck fat!
Hav2Go are here too with fresh calamari rings and on this occasion Gillardeau oysters freshly shucked and paired with raspberry infused hot sauce. Tacos Chucho’s pork quesadillas have great flavor filled with cheesy goodness and Stormly, La Drueta, Cow Bar and Bucket Bar provide the cocktails, wine and beer. Organic juices are prepared by Juice Bar and coffee is brought to you by Silver Streak Coffee Club. On a sunny day CPH Street Food has outdoor dining areas so spend an hour or spend the day, the food here is diverse, flavoursome and won’t break the bank.Have you been to delicious Copenhagen? A warm, inviting city and a place we love….

Jenny & Troy, I am so pleased I had a hand in transporting you! I’m currently salivating as I type a new post for the Meatpacking District in Copenhagen. The development of the disused buildings and the integration of fantastic restaurants, bars and galleries will really make you want to make the trip! It’ll be published this Thursday. Those Danes really know how to live! 🙂
Lovely guide! It makes me love my own city even more. Thanks a lot <3
Thank you, Signe! We love your city too and we’re looking forward to a return visit so we can catch up! 🙂
What a great guide to my own city! Off the traditional beaten track and into all those trendy and colorful corners that make Copenhagen worth visiting! Haven´t been half the places that you have – yet! Can´t wait to go back to my city and follow in your footsteps 🙂 Keep it coming!
“Meat-packing” is coming up in a couple of weeks Mette, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. So much to see, do and of course, eat! I can’t wait to go back to your city!! 🙂
